Volunteer with ‘NightChurch Pz’: Could you spare a few hours to make a difference in our community? NightChurch Pz at St. Mary’s Church, Chapel Street, is seeking volunteers who can commit to 3 hours on a weekly, fortnightly, or monthly basis. ~ Inspired by our Christian faith, we are passionate about seeing everyone in our community experience life to the full. We believe that every person deserves access to a safe space, supportive relationships, and opportunities to thrive and reach their full potential. ~ By bringing together local churches, we aim to journey alongside people facing difficult circumstances, offering hope, encouragement, and practical support for the future.
Might you be able to support in areas including: – Welcome and hospitality – Listening and conversation – Prayer support – Creative activities. ~ Whether you have experience in these areas or simply a heart for people, we would love to hear from you. Taizé services are also held in other churches in West Cornwall. They are 45-50 minutes long, meditative and aim to encourage people to encounter God in a new way. Each service is informal, candlelit, quiet and reflective, including Bible readings, prayers, reflections and times of silence as well as music. The musical chants are simple, easy to learn and very beautiful.

‘Disability Sunday’ on 28th September 2025. A Churches Together Service involving disabled people was held at High Street Methodist Church,

The Cornish Christmas Giving Catalogue 2025 supports our Foodbank and Breakfast Project and also many other Cornish projects.

Summary: Following a talk given by guest speakers at our February Forum on the local need for Befrienders, a meeting will take place at 7pm on Tuesday 6th May 2025 at High Street Methodist Church Penzance, for anyone interested in finding out more or in becoming a Befriender. ALL ARE INVITED POSTER

More: A proposal has been put forward to CTIPA for a NEW Project. LONELINESS AND ISOLATION is a major health and wellbeing issue everywhere. The Kernow Gateway of Social Prescribers and other community groups told CTIPA of a huge unmet need for befrienders in our West Penwith community.

When CTiPA had ‘The Giving Shop’ project at The Wharfside – one of the beneficial side effects was that it was able to offer a space where people who otherwise would be alone, could find friendship and fellowship. Our church congregations are quite good at friendship. However, those who live alone, or are housebound through illness or frailty, often socially have nothing and no-one – and some would find it difficult or impossible to walk into a church or to join any activity group.

If you are interested in finding out about volunteering to become a befriender, there will be an open evening at HIGH STREET Methodist Chapel on TUESDAY 6TH MAY at 7 PM – POSTER – where we will discuss this further, and if feasible form a steering group to take this idea to the next stage of recruitment and training which we hope would be assisted by Age UK.

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is observed in January each year from the 18th to the 25th January during the octave of St. Peter and St. Paul (2026 information and resources links are below).

CTIPA members and friends will join Penzance Catholic Church for Choral Evening Prayer for Christian Unity on Sunday 18th January 2026 at 6.00 pm at Penzance Catholic Church, Rosevean Road, Penzance, TR18 2DX. All are welcome – refreshments after – download a poster

The Theme for 2026 is: “One Body, One Spirit”.  The prayers and reflections for the Week have been prepared by the faithful of the Armenian Apostolic Church, along with their brothers and sisters of the Armenian Catholic and Evangelical Churches. ~ These are available to download from Churches Together In Britain and Ireland and are jointly published by the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity and the World Council of Churches.

Some themes for this special week:-
Day 1:-  I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to walk in a manner worthy of your calling.
Day 2:-  With all humility and gentleness, with patience, bear with one another in love.
Day 3:-  Make ever effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Day 4:-  There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope.
Day 5:-  One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism.
Day 6:-  One God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all.
Day 7: – But each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christ’s gift.
Day 8:- The gifts he gave were for building up the body of Christ, until all of us come to the unity of the Faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ.

The World Day of Prayer is an international event held on the first Friday of March ~ Each year a service is written by a group from a different country. The same service is enjoyed across the globe. It is a lovely way to discover more about people’s lives and to have the opportunity to thank God for His provision for us.

2026 CTiPA service 11am at Chapel Street Methodist Church, Penzance. ~  Do come and join us and be part of this extraordinary generous movement.

“The Women’s World Day of Prayer movement, as it was called originally, began in the late 19th century in America, and since then has developed and grown, always promoting reconciliation through an ecumenical approach. Although the writing committee will always be female, it has always welcomed gentlemen to get involved too. The monies collected are distributed to a wide range of charities.

We gather at Penzance Bus station, the procession will leave at 11.30 am to  “Follow the Cross” up Market Jew Street followed by a short service at the Salvation Army Hall, Queen Street and refreshments afterwards. All welcome.

PLACES OF REGULAR OPEN PRAYER IN AND AROUND PENZANCE

For many Christians, the power of individual or collective prayer is the most important aspect of their lives.

Prayer stations can now be visited in most of our churches when opened, throughout the week. Please read on to find out where prayer groups meet in Penzance and should you wish to join anyone of them, you would be most welcomed.

In trying to live a Christian life, we all recognise the value of prayer, especially for those who are involved in the various activities taking place in our Churches who give so much of themselves.

Many do, of course pray privately but it is generally agreed that prayer is immensely strengthened by being together with others, even in a small group. The inner work goes much more smoothly and the intensity is much greater than during periods of solitary prayer.

Jesus said, ‘Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the midst of them’ (Matthew 18:20).

PRAYER GROUPS HAPPENING THROUGHOUT THE WEEK

Tues 7.00pm St Peter’s Newlyn. Usually 45mins with 30 mins of Contemplative Prayer.
Wed 9am Chapel Street Methodist Church (CSMC) Penzance.
Wed 5.30pm St Mary’s Penzance Contemplative Eucharist with scriptural meditation.

Thurs 9.15 am High Street Methodist Chapel – prayer for our town and for direction for the future work for PZ Town Pastors.   There will also be opportunity to prayer walk in small teams.  

MONTHLY

Second Monday each month, 11am at High Street Methodist Church, prayers and letter writing for Persecuted Christians in support of “Open Doors.”

Last Monday each month – 8pm St Johns, Penzance Contemplative prayer / meditation.
Brief reading followed by silence. Door is locked at 8pm so please let the church warden know if you are coming.

Last Thursday each month – 7.30pm Salvation Army Hall.

 The Rev. Howard Peskett has been co-ordinating a small group who have been taking assemblies at Humphry Davy School for several years now and we are grateful for the positive connection with the staff group at the school and for the opportunity to engage with pupils.

Rev Howard stepped down from this role at the AGM in July 2024 and we are sad that we are unable to continue with this aspect of our service to our community.   

We offer our grateful thanks to Rev Howard for his commitment and service over the years.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity ARCHIVE:
2025: The Theme for 2025 was: “Do you believe this?” (John 11:26). For the year 2025, the prayers and reflections for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity were prepared by the brothers and sisters of the monastic community of Bose in northern Italy. The resources are jointly published by the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity and the World Council of Churches download  ~  Information and Prayer Resources are also available to download from Churches Together In Britain and Ireland.

2024: The Theme for 2024 was: ‘‘You shall love the Lord your God… and your neighbour as yourself’ (Lk 10:27).’ – Information and Prayer Resources available to download from Churches Together In Britain and Ireland.  Members and friends of CTIPA took part locally by joining Penzance Catholic Church for Choral Evening Prayer at 6pm on 21st January 2024

2023: Our service during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2023 was held on Sunday 29th January at 2.30 pm in High Street Methodist Chapel, with Rev. Ralph Ward.   Members of several congregations took park in this moving service, which was attended by over 65 people.   The retiring collecting was shared between our own Breakfast Project and the Open Doors charity.  Over £450 was raised which was shared between the two charities.  Thank you all for this generous donation to such good causes. The theme for 2023 was, ‘Be-Longing: Praying for Unity amidst Injustice’. World Day of Prayer ARCHIVE: The same service is enjoyed across the globe. It is a lovely way to discover more about people’s lives and to have the opportunity to thank God for His provision for us.

2025: The service was composed by the ladies of the Cook Islands.  The scripture chosen for this year is, ‘I made you wonderful‘ (Psalm 139, v.14). 2024: 1st March 2024 at Penzance Catholic Church, Rosevean Road. Theme: ‘I beg you, bear with one another in love’ ~ Poster ~ info & resources 2024 ~ press release  The 2024 service was prepared by the women of Palestine.  

2023: We enjoyed being able to join in celebrating this worldwide event  – this year held at the Salvation Army Citadel and we all send our thanks to Susan and David and their team for hosting this event.  Thanks to Mandy Pearce for organising this event, and we all look forward to the 2024 service. The sum of £251 was raised which is distributed to various charities throughout the world. LENT FRUGAL LUNCHES ARCHIVE:

2025 Thanks to everyone who hosted, attended and contributed to the Lent Lunches and Walk of Witness for 2025.  The sum raised for Christian Aid and for CAFOD was £1,474.83 towards the wonderful work these two international organisations provide to tackle worldwide food poverty.  

2024: Six lent lunches were hosted in 2024 by YMCA and Quakers, St Pol de Leon Paul, High Street Methodists, St Thomas’ Heamoor, St Peters Newlyn and Wesley Rock and Madron Methodists.

2023: Six lent lunches were hosted in 2023 by YMCA and Quakers, Wesley Rock and Madron Methodists, High Street Chapel, St Thomas’ Heamoor, St Peters Newlyn and the Roman Catholic Churches. Thank you all for providing excellent refreshments. The lunches were attended by between 40 & 55 people each Saturday – and the fellowship was enjoyed by all. Money was raised for: Christian Aid £ 865.50 (gift aided) and CAFOD £793.00. Thank you all for your donations – and what a fabulous amount of money raised.

GOOD FRIDAY WALK OF CHRISTIAN WITNESS ARCHIVE:
2023 – by KM: I estimate about 50 which is a good turnout.  Our group walked up Market Jew Street from the bus station, for a short service outside Market House.  Many thanks to the Salvation Army Band for the music.  What a talented group. We sang two hymns,  ” When I Survey the Wonderous Cross ”  and ” There is a Green Hill Far Away “

Good Friday ?

Why is it called good when what happened was so bad?

The events of that dark day are nothing short of sad. 

But 

out of darkness comes a light that drives bad away.

It never would have happened if not for that sad day. 

But Jesus knew that this was why he came.

For all who trust in Him their life will never be the same. 

We can call it good because He gave Himself for all. 

But we only see the gain if we will heed the call. 

For God so loved the world that he gave us His Son, 

Eternal life for all who believe He is the One.

AGM ARCHIVE: The 2024 AGM was held on 18th June at High Street Methodist Church.  Karen welcomed everyone and began the meeting with a short reading – Isaiah 58.10.  The Accounts for 2023 were received. All required submissions to The Charity Commission have been made.

The Guest speakers were Faye and Ian from St Petroc’s.  We were informed that St Petroc’s is a valuable resource and the support from Churches Together is invaluable. St Petroc’s began in Truro in 1968, and has evolved over the years.

There are now centres in Truro, Newquay and Bodmin. They have approximately 23 houses which provide around 60 bed spaces. There is a desperate need for support housing in Penzance. There are two drop in places, Penzance and Truro. Thanks to the Breakfast Project who help to build trust, which enables people to settle and work with those who offer support and advice. The provision of a meal at a set time gives structure to the day and provides a social aspect.

St Petroc’s provide laundry facilities, and 1-1 support for individuals who are homeless, and have showers etc, all things that we take for granted and this is a lifeline. It is important to have a space where people can talk with volunteers/staff. There were 51 homeless during May and the number is increasing. Night shelters where previously run in Penzance and Truro but had to close during covid, when many were put in B & B’s after risk assessments were undertaken.

The homeless require a bank account to access money. Some banks are more understanding than others. Breadline helps to set these up and provide morale support. People can get their post sent to Breadline, and St Petroc’s also provide people with a basic phone. Faye has been dealing with setting up postal votes for the homeless. Breadline has started a women’s group.
